HOW TO MAKE MOVIES OF YOUR REANALYSIS MAPS
(one of several ways)

NOTE: This is how to do it with Adobe ImageReady (part of Adobe Photoshop) contact Scott for directions in CorelDraw

1.  Save your time series or sequence of maps (in gif or jpeg format) in a single folder, one for each sequence (e.g. 1993months, 1994months, etc.)

2.  Find a computer with Adobe Photoshop and ImageReady installed -- The Information Commons in the Main Library has Photoshop CS & ImageReady CS (newest versions) installed or you can download a free trial version of Photoshop CS (includes ImageReady CS) at: http://www.adobe.com/products/tryadobe/main.jsp#product=39    (it will expire on your computer after 30 days!)

3.  Also be sure you have QuickTime installed on the computer you want to show the "movie" on.

You can download QuickTime free at the following link, but check to see if you have it installed on your computer first -- you probably do!   http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

4. Once you have your map sequence file and ImageReady together on the same computer, follow the easy directions outlined on this helpful webpage:

5.  Works like a charm!

6.  If you want to put your movie into a Powerpoint presentation, follow the directions under Help in Powerpoint:

Add a movie or animated GIF to a slide

"Movies" are desktop video files with formats such as AVI, QuickTime, and MPEG, and file extensions such as .avi, .mov, .qt, .mpg, and .mpeg. An animated GIF file always has a .gif file extension.

  1. Display the slide to which you want to add a movie or animated GIF.
  2. Do one of the following:

Add a movie or animated GIF file

    1. On the Insert menu, point to Movies and Sounds, click Movie from File, locate the folder that contains the file you want, and then double-click the file.

Note   A movie or .gif file that you've added to Clip Organizer is found in the Clip Organizer folder within the My Pictures folder on your hard disk. Or, go to the original location for these files.

    2. When a message is displayed, do one of the following:
      • To play the movie or GIF automatically when you go to the slide, click Yes.
      • To play the movie or GIF only when you click it, click No.

NOTE: if you do the above to put your QuickTime movie into Powerpoint, you may get a message saying it can't be played.  If so, try this:

PowerPoint won't play my QuickTime movie file in either PowerPoint or Microsoft Windows Media Player.

Try to play the movie in Microsoft PowerPoint by creating a link to an application that will play it. The application must be installed on your computer.
  1. Open the movie file from your desktop to see if you have another application installed that will play the file. If you can play the movie, continue with this task.

If you don't have a program that will play the movie, try downloading the appropriate QuickTime program from the Apple Computer, Inc., Web site, and proceed with this task.

  2. Display the slide you want the movie on in PowerPoint, and on the Slide Show menu, point to Action Buttons, then select the Movie action button.
  3. Draw a button on the slide. The Action Settings dialog box appears; click Run program and then click Browse
  4. In the Browse dialog box, change Files of type to All Files. Then browse to your movie file and click OK.
  5. Click OK in the Action Settings dialog box.

During a presentation, when you get to the slide with the movie object on it, click the movie object to launch the application that plays the movie. If the application doesn't automatically play the movie, you will have to click a command within the application to launch the movie.

The above steps are also useful for running other applications during a presentation when you want to use an unsupported multimedia type.
