ANNOUNCEMENTS

IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY

In class today we did the following:

1.  Dr. H gave a presentation on:

Topic # 4 MATTER & ENERGY (and How They Relate)  [pdf file]

  • Here's a link to the Arizona Star article on Arizona heat cheats drivers at gas pump

  • Dr H gave a short "demo" on atom behavior during and temperature changes.  You can see something similar at THIS LINK    (scroll down to the "box temperature" animation)

2.  Students got in groups and finished up the G-1 Group Ecological Footprint Activity.

3.  The groups then worked on G-2 Organizing the Periodic Table which is based on pp 141-145 of the CLASS NOTES Appendix.

ANNOUNCEMENTS  (We'll be trying to keep these to a minimum during class time)

  • Overall, you've done a GREAT JOB on getting up and running with the logistics of this class!! BRAVO CLASS!  J
If you haven't yet done so when your reviewed the FAQ, please review the LEARNING PHILOSOPHY underlying this class

  • If you had trouble getting the RQ done on time, I have extended the cutoff in a “class-wide” absolution until 5:00 pm Friday. (Why? It’s the first one, plus a few students are new or can’t get the textbook yet.)

  • OFFICE HOURS are now posted for Dr H and the TA’s on the TEACHING TEAM link.  They are held in Information Commons 104A

  • If you haven’t discovered it yet, ALWAYS SEE THE WEEKLY D2L CHECKLIST for announcements of assignments, RQ’s TESTS, etc. and when they are due.  (FYI, RQ-2 will be posted this weekend and is due next Thursday at noon)

  • Remember, IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS are always listed under LATEST NEWS in D2L and announcements made in class (like this one) are posted here in the CLASS FOLLOW-UP-- so always check here too!

  • Finally, just a reminder that you are responsible for knowing the information about due dates and assignments – don’t count on getting a reminder during class time about everything that is due.

  • NOTE:  There are two typos with incorrect test dates in the printed TEXTBOOK READING SCHEDULE on p 4 of CLASS NOTES.
For the correct dates click here ==>  TEXTBOOK READING SCHEDULE   -- please change the dates on p 4 of CLASS NOTES for Test #2 and the Midterm Exam.
The Semester-on-a Page (p 5 in CLASS NOTES) has all the correct dates.

  • Have a great Labor Day weekend!!

IF YOU MISSED CLASS TODAY:

  • Review the presentation for Topic #4 that you missed (by clicking on the presentation link above).

  • Complete the G-2 Periodic Table activity  on your own (pp 141-145 in CLASS NOTES)    Cut out the atom diagrams on p 145 and use those to do the activity since you won't have access to the cutout versions that were used in class.   Turn in your completed activity next Tuesday with a note explaining why you had to miss class and if your excuse is acceptable -- or has already been approved by Dr H (e.g., family crisis, soccer team away game) you will get credit for the group work you missed.

  • Be sure you visit the D2L checklist to stay on top of what tasks need to be completed this week and started for next week.
